Car used in brutal Bayonne gas station robbery

The car used in the brutal robbery of a Bayonne gas station attendant who was shot in the chest during the attack may have been stolen from a Staten Island woman, the Staten Island Advance is reporting on its website.

Elsie Kathy Erie, 45, of Westervelt Avenue last saw her car -- a 1999 Volkswagen Passat -- at 10 p.m. Sunday, but noticed it missing at 11:45 p.m. when she went back to get something from it, police told the Advance. She called 911 to report it stolen just before midnight, but no one answered the door when police arrived, the paper said. Police got a second call reporting the vehicle stolen at 2 p.m.

The car is still missing, the paper said.

The robbed Bayonne gas station is at Route 440 and Fifth Street, just blocks from the Bayonne Bridge, which connects the city with Staten Island.

Robbers armed with a handgun and either a shotgun or a rifle jumped out of a burgundy car around 11 p.m. Sunday and attacked the 37-year-old attendant in his booth. The attendant was shot in the chest but was able to crawl away. He was being treated yesterday at the Jersey City Medical Center.

Police have released security video of the attack in the hope that someone with information will come forward.

Police are working to determine if the Bayonne robbery is connected to similar robberies in Harrison and Newark.
