Frightening armed bank robbery

Police are searching for a bank robber and his getaway driver after a heist on Auckland's North Shore this morning.

An armed man entered the Wairau Park BNZ on Link Drive, Wairau Park, about 10.40am. He pointed a gun at staff members and demanded money.

He then ran from the bank into a waiting blue Subaru Impreza.

Police would not say how much money he got away with.

The car left at high speed and was found abandoned less than a kilometre away in Athena Drive, Totara Vale.

No-one was injured in the robbery. Only one customer was in the store at the time.

The offender was wearing a black puffer jacket with the hood up, and a white mask over his face.

The car was stolen from South Auckland several days ago.

Police investigating the aggravated robbery were appealing for anyone who may have seen it to contact them.

"The car is reasonably distinctive, it's a modified Blue Subaru Impreza with a bonnet that has been painted matte black with white spoke mags" Detective Sergeant James Watson said.

"We'd especially like to hear from anyone who saw this car in the Link Drive/Totara Vale area.

"This was a frightening experience for everyone involved, and we want to catch these people as soon as possible."

Anyone with information is urged to call North Shore police on 09 477 5000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
